This past Sunday's live stream went great and I say that with great surprise under my breath! lol To be honest there was a good chunk of that stream that I have never felt more uncomfortable.....
I just wasn't feeling the painting in the beginning, I knew what I wanted but felt like everything I did to try and get there was taking me further away from the original idea.
The original idea of a white unicorn with a pink hue and pink hair, a teal pumpkin and gold foil leaf to accent on the unicorn horn, the unicorn hooves and the painted face of the pumpkin, the paint dripping from the can and paint on the paint brush.
To add stress to that I was live on camera attempting to look like I know what I'm doing and not let all of this uncertainty and fear show thru! The truth is I rarely know what I'm doing lol I just know what I like and what I think looks nice and or good.
The problem here was that the unicorn was looking too flat, no depth at all and the more I tried to fix that the more pink she looked and not white at all! I wanted her to be white, with a pink hue, not pink. The hair was starting to look too red and for some reason I was forgetting my own advice! lol
Finally I remembered and decided to take my own advice that I have been giving out in every single Sunday live stream since the beginning and that is...
"If you don't like it.....just add another layer! A good painting is just another layer of paint away!"
So that is what I did! I continued to add layer over layer of translucent pearly colors.
The unicorn was looking too pink so I added Navajo Pearl which is a very translucent pearl color with a soft green base, not enough green to turn the unicorn green but just enough green to tone down the pink and help balance it out and bring her back to whiteness.
I also used my interference green which is a translucent iridescent color that has a green hue which I used to add highlights to both the unicorn and her hair, this helped to tone down the red in her hair as well.
To bring the hair back to pink I went over all of it with my interference red which is just like the interference green but rather has a pink hue instead of green.
I finally finished off the painting with gold foil leaf, adding it to her horn, hooves, the heart above her, the pumpkins face, the paint can and the paint brush.
In the end I am so incredibly pleased with how it all turned out! I wanted to give this detailed account of what happened because I do not feel that I provided it in the live stream. Unfortunately in the live stream I let fear, not fear of the artwork but rather fear of "what will they think" and I let that consume me.
I feel this was a great learning experience in many ways, not just in the artwork and painting but also for myself to get better at these live streams and better at teaching. I will try in the future to be more honest about what and how I am feeling so in working thru these artistic problems live on the stream, they can become teachable moments for everyone.
